Minister for Further Education, Simon Harris, has confirmed that permanent accommodation for Cavan Institute will be considered as part of this next investment phase.
The Minister was speaking in the Dail about the matter following questions from both Deputy Brendan Smith and Deputy Niamh Smyth this week.
Minister Harris said that Cavan Monaghan Education and Training Board will be required to submit a proposal in line with the framework established for FET major capital projects, and in accordance with the requirements of the Public Spending Code.
This process, he continued, will allow options to be considered in relation to the potential campus location and other relevant project parameters.
As Cathaoirleach of the first Board of Management of Cavan Institute, Deputy Smith said he was “very glad” to support developments there.
He added that the sector had grown in numbers and in importance while continuing to ensure that students could access suitable courses of learning.
Deputy Niamh Smyth, meanwhile, highlighted how “unacceptable” it was that Cavan Institute had remained on the building list for over eight years.
She said that both the principal and deputy principal at the institute had been “relentless” in their efforts to attract students; provide a broad spectrum of courses; and in the provision of a positive learning experience for all those in attendance.
“Cavan Institute is best placed to become the hub for integrated Further Education and Training services in Cavan,” added Deputy Smyth.
"But the reality is that the premises no longer met the needs of students."
