A ‘perfect storm’ is on the horizon for the Monaghan agricultural sector if changes aren’t made to the permit process for workers.
Senator Robbie Gallagher told the Seanad last week that the labour shortages are putting the mushroom sector in the county in a crisis situation, with poultry and meat processing also under threat.
He says many in the sector had hoped that there would be a new quota for Agricultural work permits in September but that has not yet materialised.
He says that the border region faces a disproportionate amount of issues across the agricultural industries and has called for action:
