We are in for a perfect storm at the moment for a major shortage of fruit and veg for shoppers right across the country.
That's according to Brian Ellis from Fresh Today who is based in Arva. The Cavan man says prices are set to shoot upwards through the coming weeks.
Weather and the costs of production are having serious issues for the availability for many fruit and vegetables. Produce such as tomatoes, cucumbers, iceberg lettuce, cauliflower and broccoli are all at risk of short supply and price increase. He says there is a 40 to 50 percent drop in produce coming in to cover Brian's fresh today stores.
Mr. Ellis says that for too many years fruit and veg has been sold as a loss leader in large supermarkets and its having a knock on effect on the industry.
