'We want a fully functioning and safe A&E in this county into the future'

Protestors say they will fight tooth and nail against the HSE's plan to close Navan Hospital's emergency department.

They will march on the HSE offices in Kells in County Meath at 1pm today, demanding its protection and investment.

It comes after over 15 thousand people signed a petition which was delivered to the Health Minister Stephen Donnelly 2 weeks ago.

Chairperson of the group, Aontú Leader Peadar Tóibín, says the emergency department system is at crisis point:

"We are in an A&E waiting time crisis at the moment - the worst the State has ever seen," he added.

"To close key A&E capacity at this time would be absolutely wrong.

"We are asking people to turn out in numbers today; to show the power of the people in terms of pushing back against the Government and HSE.

"We want a fully functioning and safe A&E in this county into the future."
