Cavan Monaghan Sinn Féin TD, Deputy Matt Carthy, has told the Dáil this week that people in Co. Monaghan feel unsafe walking down streets of towns and villages in the county.
Deputy Carthy accused the government of failing to listen to the concerns of local communities, businesses and visitors to towns and cities. Deputy Carthy also told the Taoiseach that increased garda resources for Dublin City, while much needed, cannot be at the expense of counties such as Cavan and Monaghan.
Of the 227 Gardaí that have came out of Templemore this year so far 165 of them have been deployed to Dublin according to the local deputy. Deputy Carthy said If this trend continues it will mean that all areas outside of Dublin will have fewer Gardaí next year than this.
Addressing Leo Varadkar in the Dáil, Deputy Carthy said Dublin is under-policed, and there are not enough Gardaí in our capital city, which is beyond doubt since last Thursday he said. “Dublin is under-policed, there are not enough Gardaí in our capital city. That is beyond doubt since last Thursday. But, the rest of the state is also under-policed. "In county Monaghan, I am regularly hearing from my constituents in each of our towns and villages that tell me that they feel unsafe walking down their main street for the first time in their lives. After 12 years of Fine Gael governments, we have fewer Gardaí and less Garda stations than when your party came to office."
