'A wonderful man who has left a wonderful legacy'. These were the sentiments expressed by former GAA President, Aogán O'Fearghail, as he lead tributes this morning to Peadar O'Brádaigh who died earlier this week.
Mr O'Brádaigh was Chairman of Northern Sound from 1990 to 2007 and also served as Chairman of Cavan GAA. Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show, Mr O'Fearghail described him as a GAA man who was committed to the Irish language, its traditions, and song and dance.
He highlighted how Mr O'Brádaigh had a particular grá for hurling and did a lot of work promoting the game in Co Cavan. Both men worked on the Irish language programme 'Gaeilge Go Leor' for 10 years on Shannonside Northern Sound, and went on to clinch a broadcasting award in 2005 such was the show's popularity and reach.
Mr O'Fearghail added that Mr O'Brádaigh knew people everywhere and his passion for Irish culture and traditions meant he could mention parishes and place names no matter where he went.
"Peadar's whole life was based on his underlining philosophy and the strong part of that was local. Peter was a man of the world and he saw, and was very knowledgeable, about all things. But he always viewed that the place you were from was at the heart of everything he thought about and everything he did.
"Whether that was drama, media, community, or local, what ever it was, you needed to have an appreciation of what was behind your own house, down your field, in your own parish, and in your own community. He believed that needed to be at the heart of everything you did before embracing a wider world," he added.
