Payments worth over €34 million has been announced for the Shannonside Northern Sound region under the 2020 Areas of Natural Constraint Scheme.
Over 17,000 farmers in the region are to benefit from the scheme.
The Agriculture Minister, Charlie McConalogue, says he is very conscious of the challenges facing farmers in 2020 and of the importance of the timely delivery of payments under the ANC scheme.
In line with last year’s arrangement, the payments being issued are an 85% advance payment on the ANC Scheme.
Roscommon is the local county that is set to gain the most, with 4,752 farmers sharing payments totalling close to €9.8 million.
In Leitrim, 2,797 farmers will receive payments worth almost €6.3 million, while 1,995 Longford farmers will receive just under €4 million.
Meanwhile, in the Northern Sound region, 4,094 Cavan farmers will benefit from payments equalling close to €8.3 million under the ANC scheme and 3,380 farmers in Monaghan will receive almost €6.2 million.
Nationwide, over 86,000 farmers are being paid close to €185 million in the first tranche of advance payments, up from 79,000 farmers receiving €168.5 million at this stage in 2019.
The Agriculture Minister said the issuing of these payments now underscores his determination to maximise payments to farmers at the earliest possible time.
