Part 8 planning has been secured for the widening and upgrading of the R181 regional route from Lisnadarragh to Crossduff.
The development will include the provision of a widened verge, regraded batters, crash barriers and drainage works.
Visibility Splays - an essential feature of road junctions which allows traffic on the minor road to see cyclists, vehicles and pedestrians on the main road - will also be upgraded.
Councillor Sean Gilliand says the road is a necessity for the haulage industry and is one of the most important economic corridors in County Monaghan.
He welcomed the granting of part 8 planning for a road which he says is currently in a "deplorable" and "unsafe" state:
