The Parent's Association of a Cavan primary school is calling on the Department of Education to allow them keep a fifth teacher.
Crosserlough National School is to open fully on September 1st, but with a 31 pupil class after student numbers fell last year.
As of September last year, 107 students were enrolled in Crosserlough National School, six short of the number required to retain a fifth teacher.
The loss of a teacher meant that the 3rd and 4th Class would be merged for the coming academic year, leaving 31 pupils to a single teacher, and an empty classroom.
In a letter to parents regarding the reopening of the school next month, the Board of Management said the Department of Education hasn't allocated for another teacher to join.
The decision has caused concern to parents over social distancing and the impact it'd have on education.
Aine Boylan is the Chair of the Parents Association and is calling on Minister Norma Foley to explore easing the threshold.
The Department of Education is yet to respond to a request for comment by Northern Sound News.
