A pandemic measure that allows domestic abuse victims easier access to rent supplement has been made permanent.
Local Minister Heather Humphreys says she recognised that this support will be required long into the future and after the impact of the pandemic has receded.
It was introduced in August of last year in response to the covid pandemic.
144 victims of domestic violence availed of the measure between August 2020 and September 2021.
It gives victims immediate access to rent supplement for three months to ensure they're not prevented from leaving their home due to costs.
A further three-month extension can then be applied for but will be subject to a means assessment.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Minister Humphreys called on the government to "get tough on the perpetrators" of domestic violence:
