Local businessman Padraig Watters has spoken out for the first time after it was announced earlier today that he would be taking over the Westenra Arms Hotel from December. The McEnaney Family have been at the helm of the popular hotel which is located in Monaghan Town for the past 22 years. The sale will complete in early December 2024, at which time the Watters Family will take over control of the hotel.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Padraig said he was "delighted" to be given the opportunity to acquire the hotel, adding that he knows all too well how important the Westenra Arms is to Monaghan Town. Describing the Westenra as not only an "iconic building" but an "iconic business," Padraig revealed that is was important for the McEnaney family when selling that the business would fall into the hands of another Monaghan family who would carry on their good work. According to Mr Watters, the Westenra Arms has been operating as a hotel for the last 200 years. He added that this is something that he wants to preserve going into the future.
