The owner of an “illegally operating” slaughterhouse in Carrickmacross has been fined and had equipment seized.
It comes following a 2018 investigation by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, Monaghan and Louth County Councils, the Department of Agriculture and the Gardai.
The latest FSAI Enforcement List notes that Barry McConnon was fined €2,500 on November 25th and ordered to give up equipment from his slaughterhouse at Corcreaghy, Carrickmacross.
His slaughterhouse and cutting plant was not approved, and therefore not supervised or inspected.
In a statement following the prosecution, Dr Pamela Byrne, Chief Executive of the FSAI expressed her concern at the operation, saying it puts consumers at a high risk of foodborne illness and will not be tolerated.
