Over half a million euro in funding has been announced for heritage projects across Cavan and Monaghan today. Cavan has been awarded €355,000 for projects which includes €114,000 for the Bawnboy Workhouse, €50,000 to stabilise the Slieve Russell House building in Ballyconnell. and €50,000 for carpentry and masonry works at Billis Mills.
Built heritage projects in Monaghan will receive a total of €191,000. Some of the buildings to benefit include Drum Church in Cortubber which will receive €25,000, the Patrick Kavanagh Centre in Iniskeen and Magherarny, Old School in Smithborough which was awarded €20,000.
The financial assistance allocated to the Northern Sound region is part of a total €9 million granted by the government for 676 projects across the country. Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan said the total of €546,000 funding announcement is good news for the area. "They're all very worthwhile projects," Deputy Smith said, "I'm particularly glad that the application submitted by Cavan County Council for further improvement works at Bawnboy Workhouse with €114,000 approved by the Minister that will enable further improvement works to re-stating the roof also doing gutters and other roof rep[airs as well. That is significant additional improvement works that this funding will enable the council to carry out."
