Over 70 drivers across Cavan and Monaghan had 10 or more penalty points on their license last year according to the CSO.
48 drivers in Cavan had ten or more penalty points last year, with 16 of those facing a ban from driving. While in Monaghan, 28 had 10 or more penalty points in 2023, with 7 having 12 on their license.
Penalty points are a formal reprimand by Gardaí following a driving offence such as speeding, mobile phone use while driving or the non wearing of seatbelts. When a motorist accumulates 12 penalty points on their licence in a three year period, they are automatically banned from driving for six months. In total, 14,599 drivers across Cavan and Monaghan had at least one penalty point on their license in 2023
