Over 70 thousand people across the Shannonside Northern Sound region say they've given up smoking.
According to the latest census data, Westmeath has the highest number of those who don't smoke or who've given up smoking for good. Contained in the most recent release from the Central Statistics Office is data related to the consumption of tobacco products in each county.
The figures show that the number of non-smokers, those who've given up smoking, and those who've never tried smoking far outweigh the number of daily and occasional smokers across the region
18,196 people in Westmeath stated they've kicked the habit, the highest proportion in the region. This is followed by Cavan at just over 15,000 and Roscommon at 14,324.
11,788 people in Monaghan don't smoke or have given it up, while 8,347 people in Longford and 7,425 in Leitrim have also done the same. In total, just over 75,000 people across the Shannonside region stated they gave up smoking in the 2022 Census.
While 52,878 admitted they smoke tobacco products either daily or occasionally, a difference of around 35%
