202 people presented to Cavan County Council as homeless in the 8 months between January and August 2024, including 58 children.
The figures show a similar pattern as 2023, where a total of 317 individuals presented across 12 months, including 103 children.
The news comes on foot of a question submitted by Sinn Féin councillor Stiofán Conaty at September's meeting of the council. Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Conaty said that the figures told a grim story, indicating that the homeless situation in the county is likely worse than the figures suggest.
Cllr Conaty said the homeless figures don't take into account those families and individuals on the verge of homelessness or whose homelessness is undocumented.
Nor do they take into account the multitudes of young adults, often with children of their own, who are lucky enough to have a spare room in their parents' homes, He said that the Sinn Féin housing plan would end homelessness by 2030. The Cavan councillor said he wasn't surprised by the local figures of people experiencing homelessness in the region.
