Over 150 trout have been killed as a result of water contamination in a Co Cavan river. Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) confirmed the development this evening and are describing the incident as one of "pollution".
In a statement to Northern Sound, the body said it was alerted to the matter by a member of the public who noticed something suspicious in the river at Cavan town on Saturday morning. It pointed out that an investigation was immediately launched and the source of the pollution has since been identified.
IFI confirmed that it is currently working with all relevant agencies to ensure that a serious incident like this doesn't happen again. "IFI staff immediately went to the site and found that a pollution incident had occurred.
On investigation the source of the pollution was identified and IFI staff took water samples. The source of the pollution was stopped shortly afterwards. Approximately 150 trout were killed and investigations are continuing.
"IFI is working with other relevant agencies in relation to the incident and is not in a position to comment further on the specific cause of the fish kill," a spokesperson concluded.
