The organisers of the Cavan Market have defended holding it on Sunday.

There's been criticism of it after the country moved to Level 3 restrictions last week.

But the organisers say they have liaised with the HSE and Gardaí and are confident measures put in place are adequate.

The holding of the event was criticised at yesterday's County Council meeting, with Sinn Féin Councillor Paddy McDonald saying he didn't know why it was allowed to go ahead given that Cavan now has the highest incidence rate of Covid in the country.

A one way system was put in place with social distancing measures and only regular sellers were allowed to open stalls.

Organiser Marian Crowe says they were in touch with the HSE and Gardaí before they opened:

Photos shared on social media at the weekend drew criticism of the event but Marian said they were taken from a height which made it appear as if more people were in attendance.

A local Garda spokesperson confirmed to Shannonside Northern Sound News that new regulations came into effect last Wednesday which place restrictions on the provision of certain businesses or services.

However, they said farmers' or open air markets "are not listed as 'relevant businesses or service' for the purpose of these regulations".
