In particular, local people who have fond memories of attending mass or confessions in the Abbey are welcome.

An open invitation is being extended for people to come along to Kilnacrott Abbey near Ballyjamesduff in Cavan as work begins on its demolition. A new Catholic education and retreat centre will be developed on the abbey site by non-profit organisation, "Direction for our Times".

In particular, Fr Darragh Connolly, would like to see local people who have fond memories of attending mass or confessions in the Abbey, which was run by the Norbertine Order since 1924. Kilnacrott Abbey is also where notorious paedophile priest, Brendan Smyth, is buried.

Fr Connolly said the "ground-breaking" event tomorrow marks the end of one era and beginning of another positive one of healing and reflection: "Everybody's welcome from far and wide to come to Kilnacrott tomorrow, Saturday June 22 at one o'clock for a short ground-breaking ceremony, we would call it, and for prayers and refreshments and to see the plans that are in place," Fr Connolly told Northern Sound, "So, that's an open invitation to one and all to come and see as work begins on the redevelopment."
