Online fraud is continuing to cause major concern across the Northern Sound region. Gardaí are seeing numerous forms of online fraud still where unsuspecting victims are getting scared out of their hard earned money. According to Sergeant Mick Duffy, the most common case is a fraudster contacting you by phone pretending to be from a reputable company or victim's receiving a text or email inducing them to click on a link and give personal information. Sergeant Duffy has warned individuals to never send money to anyone you have met online no matter how much your trust them and to monitor your bank account regularly. He went out to highlight some of the ways as to how people can prevent fraud.
"Be suspicious of all too good to be true offers and deals," warned the local Sergeant. "Don't assume anyone who has sent you an email, text message or called your phone is who they say they are. Never ever give banking or personal details to someone who you don't know or trust, genuine organisations like banks or the revenue commissioners will never contact you out of the blue to ask you your pin number, password or bank details."
