A new Age Friendly project in Co Cavan will provide a platform on which older people can express themselves and share their life experiences. That's according to the county's Age Friendly Ambassador, Bob Gilbert, who was speaking to Northern Sound about the importance of older people having their voices heard.
He says the project, which will focus on a drama that will be written, directed and performed by the county's older citizens, will afford everyone involved an opportunity to explore their creative side.
Bob highlighted how the drama will highlight the issues affecting older people and help to shine a light on their achievements. He added that the programme encompasses a community ethos that brings everyone together to share their ideas and create something wonderful.
"We may not have all gone to university or secondary school but we have gone to the university of life. For many years, older people were invisible; now they are starting to become visible, starting to become heard, and getting out there into the public eye.
"20 years ago, an older person would never have dreamed of raising their voice but now they are starting to get things done," Bob said. Meanwhile, the first meeting for the drama programme takes place this Friday at Johnston Central Library in Cavan town at 11am. Older people from across the county are welcome to attend.
