Older dogs are being abandoned in rural parts of the region.
Reports out this morning from Dogs Trust say that surrender of pets up to the end of January rose by 73 per cent.
However, Tina Boyle from the Cavan SPCA said they are not experiencing a major influx of puppies with around 10-14 surrendered since Christmas.
She says that their major problem is geriatric dogs, dogs with illnesses, or dogs with injuries being left in remote rural areas to die or be found.
