A Monaghan councillor has raised his concerns over financial offers made to local landowners by Eirgrid. The offer was made in relation to the construction of the controversial North South Interconnector. According to Fianna Fáil's Seamus Coyle, such correspondence is in "total contravention" of signed instructions given to Eirgrid by landowners, not only here in Co Monaghan but across Cavan and Meath also.
Despite this, Cllr Coyle believes opposition to the proposed mast is as "strong" as ever before. Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Coyle said that landowners "will not" be co-operating with Eirgrid on this and that the communities impacted "do not" want this project constructed.
"As I understand it, the financial offers made to landowners are derisory," explained Cllr Coyle. "When you take into consideration the devaluation of the properties that these landowners and households will face, and indeed in relation to the devastation of roads and lands that the construction of this project would cause, not to mention the health concerns. As understand it, the opposition right across the communities of Monaghan and indeed Cavan and Meath is as strong as ever."
