Members of the Cavan Roads Policing Unit conducted a number of checkpoints with colleagues from The Road Safety Authority, Officers from the Revenue Commissioners, the Health and Safety Authority and the Waste Management Section of Cavan County Council. As a result of the operation, a large number of vehicles and drivers were checked yesterday from 7am to 7pm.
According to local Gardaí, two arrests were made for drug driving, one arrest for drunk driving, three vehicles detained for no insurance and in excess of 20 Fixed Payment Notices for no NCT. Others detections included driving while unaccompanied, driving with no tax displayed and driving with bald or worn tyres. HGVs were checked and numerous safety issues were detected with one lorry grounded and not allowed to continue.
A number of vehicles were also detected with incorrect fuel and dealt with by Revenue. According to Gardaí, the HSA checked numerous hazardous loads on vehicles with the waste management section of Cavan County Council inspecting vehicles carrying waste as well as other vehicles.
