Figures for nearly every type of crime in County Monaghan are down compared to this time last year.
The figures disclosed at the recent meeting of Monaghan Joint Policing Committee, show that the number of assault, burglary and public order offences in County Monaghan for the third quarter of this year are all down compared to 2022.
However, the number of sexual offences reported increased this year to 11, which is three more crimes of a sexual nature reported in Monaghan compared to last year.
The number of thefts reported in the county from July to September this year is also up to 42, while for the same period last year, 34 thefts were recorded.
One stark statistic is that for road fatalities in Co. Monaghan.
While there were no road deaths in the county in the period July to September last year, in 2023, two young people, namely 17-year-old Kiea McCann and 16-year-old Dalava Mohammed, lost their lives on a local road.
In summary, there were a total of 63 assaults, 23 burglaries, 41 drug possession, 52 thefts and 129 public order offences reported to Gardaí in the county in the three months up to this September.
Another notable statistic is a decrease in the number of drink driving offences detected down from 45 in 2022 to 38 this year and the number of drug driving detections down one to 11 detections this year.
