There was over 21,000 people aged 65 and over living in the Northern Sound region in April of 2022. That's according to CSO figures that have been released in recent weeks.
There were 11,868 people aged 65 and over living in Cavan. Of these 3,235 were living alone. This was a 17 per cent increase in those aged 65 and over living alone. While in Monaghan there were 9,894 people aged 65 and over living in the county. Of these 2,692 were living alone. This marked a 21 per cent increase in those aged 65 and over living alone.
The average household size in Cavan and Monaghan in April 2022 was 2.8 people, which was above the national average (2.74 people). The number of people living alone in Cavan grew from 6,683 to 6,995, an increase of five per cent since Census 2016. While the number of people living alone in the county grew from 5,148 to 5,618, an increase of nine per cent since 2016.
