The number of involuntary admissions under the mental health act in the Cavan/Monaghan area has decreased.
The figures are contained in the latest annual report from the Mental Health Commission. Involuntary admissions are covered under the Mental Health Act 2001 and refer to a person being admitted to hospital against their will. An involuntary admission can only happen if a person is not willing to go into hospital and is suffering from either mental illness, a significant intellectual disability, or severe dementia. The number of these incidents has decreased in the CHO1 area, which covers Cavan and Monaghan, between 2022 and 2023. In 2023, there were 132 involuntary admissions, with an additional 37 admissions which were re-graded from voluntary to involuntary, totalling 169. This is a decrease on the 2022 figure of 191, broken into 163 admissions and 28 regraded admissions.
Nationally, 2,516 people were admitted to hospital against their will.
