As the general election looks set to be called sooner rather than later, something needs to be done to encourage more people out to vote. That's according to a motion put down at the last Cavan County Council meeting by veteran councillor Clifford Kelly at the last Cavan County Council meeting.
Cllr Kelly wants the Election Commission and the Department of the Environment with responsibility for voter registration, to publicise the importance of voting more. He said all councillors were "shocked" when voter statistics came in following the recent local elections.
The overall turnout in County Cavan was little over half of all eligible to vote at 55.49 per cent and only slightly better in Monaghan at 56.09 per cent.
Cllr Kelly's motion received widespread support from the chamber.
