The number of adverse incidents recorded in Shannonside Northern Sound region increased between 2021 and last year. The figures were by the HSE in response to a parlimantary question from Meath West TD, Peader Toibín.
The HSE defines an adverse incident as an event that results in harm, which may or may not be as a result of an error. The latest figures show the CHO1 area, which includes Leitrim, Cavan, and Monaghan, had the highest number of adverse incidents recorded last year at 11,944.
This represents an increase on 2021's figure of 10,495. CHO2, which includes Roscommon, recorded 4,729 incidents, up from 4,158 in 2021. 5,298 adverse incidents occurred in Longford/Westmeath last year, an increase from 4,790.
The data also shows the amount of incidents per hospital group. The Saolta Hospital Group including Roscommon Hospital, Portiuncula, Sligo University Hospital, and University Hospital Galway had the highest number of incidents at 14,128.
This represents an increase of over 2,000 from the previous year. 9,611 incidents were recorded in the Ireland East Hospital Group, incorporating Mullingar Hospital, up from 7,590. While the RCSI group, which includes Cavan General Hospital, was the only group to report a decrease in incidents, from 8,985 in 2021, to 6,655 last year.
Nationally, just under 107,000 adverse incidents happened in hospitals across the country last year, an increase from the 2021 figure of 95,696.
