The Minister for Education, Norma Foley, was in Monaghan today for a series of engagements including attending an empowering women event in St Louis Secondary School. The Minister was going on from Monaghan Town to Castleblayney to turn the sod on the long-anticipated Gael Scoil Lorgan.
Principal of St Louis', Mrs Margaret Conlon, invited her "good pal", the Minister to come to the all-girls school to meet with students and join with them as they celebrate the achievements of past and current students. During a special assembly, when Transition Year students performed a song specially written for the event, the minister with responsibility for the country's education system was asked by one pupil to explain her Department's decision to do away the inflated grades for Leaving Cert. One pupil also used the occasion to ask the minister how to succeed in politics and life.
Deputy Foley told Northern Sound it was her pleasure to come and meet young Monaghan women: "I'm really, really pleased I'm here for an event like this," Norma Foley told Northern Sound, "Not least because because it is a celebration of the giftedness of the potential and possibility in this instance of all these young girls and it's also a recognition of all that's been achieved by students in the past as they go out into the bigger world but, it's also recognising that the students in our care today have enormous potential and possibility."
