There are no plans to remove or relocate the High Cross in Clones.
The board of the Ballybay Clones MD issued a statement at their recent meeting to address what they described as 'false rumours' that had been circulating.
These allegations stated that the cross was to be taken down as it was causing offence to people of a non-Christian faith.
However, it was confirmed that this was untrue, and there was no funding in place to either relocate the cross indoors, or provide a replica in its place at the current location.
It was acknowledged that plans will have to be made to protect it, as it is deteriorating due to exposure to poor weather conditions but nothing has been done to date.
Councillors did request that all matters to do with the High Cross be brought to members of Monaghan County Council to ensure that everyone is on the same page in the future.
