The North South Interconnector has been a long running issue for a long number of years for landowners across Cavan and Monaghan.
A second interconnector is needed according to Eirgrid. According to the Chief Infrastructure Officer of Eirgrid, the interconnector is needed to allow more power to be transferred from the North and the South, improving security supply along with cheaper electricity prices and help meet our renewable and carbon targets.
The cross-border project aims to run a new overhead 400 kilo-Volt power line to connect the electricity grids here with that in Northern Ireland. The line will run through Monaghan, Cavan and Meath in Ireland, and Armagh and Tyrone in Northern Ireland. Michael Mahon the Chief Infrastructure Officer of Eirgrid this strategic project needs to be delivered and will bring with it a lot of benefits for the region.
He says there is a lot of misinformation out there when it comes to the delivery of the North South Interconnector, adding that putting the cables underground is simply not an option. Mr Mahon said the compensation that is being offered is the first and last offer that will be made under this voluntary option and if the voluntary offer isn't accepted they would be then looking at a statutory process.
