The Cavan/Dublin 109X Bus Eireann route is very unfair to the elderly and the vulnerable in the region.
That's according to a County Cavan resident who travelled on the bus route in recent days to the Mater Hospital in Dublin.
She was surprised to learn that the bus does not go directly to the city hospital but instead only stops at Doyles Corner on Dorset Street.
She told Northern Sound while it's a 10 minute walk, it could take much longer for an older or venerable person to reach the hospital.
The Bus Eireann route use to stop outside the Mater Hospital but was re-routed in 2017.
Breda from County Cavan highlighted this issue on the Joe Finnegan show this morning and said that this could hinder people attending the Dublin Hospital.
Bus Eireann issued the Joe Finnegan Show with the following statement earlier:
The changes to Route 109X have had a positive impact on journey times and allow the service to operate to the new Technical University of Dublin campus and to connect with the Luas at Broadstone.
In 2017, there was a significant improvement in service levels on the whole M3 corridor and the introduction of the NX route, and the 109X was rerouted to make the best use of bus corridors.
The inbound service stops at Phibsborough Road and the outbound service stops at Dorset Street Lower. Both of these stops are 5-8 minutes walk from the Mater Hospital.
We take onboard feedback from customers and regularly meet to discuss our services with the National Transport Authority, for whom we operate this route under contract.
