Pharmacists will soon be able to extend a prescription from six to twelve months. The move which will take effect from March 1st is part of measures to enhance the role of pharmacists and limit the pressure on GP services.
Health Minister Stephen Donnelly says it will mean many patients will be able to continue medications without the need for a repeat prescription. Monaghan GP, Dr Illona Duffy says there are changes for both doctors and pharmacists.
"There two parts to this, number one that the prescriber, meaning the doctor, can issue a prescription for 12 months or where the pharmacist feels it's appropriate they can extend a prescription that's for a shorter period of time up to 12 months, so that's what is under the proposal," the local GP explained.
