A new programme will mean young people with intellectual disabilities can get a third level education in the region.
The CMETB is to start the rollout of training for tutors in Latch On and MOTE this November which will offer literacy skills and encourage political engagement in the after school years.
Martin McBreen from the Down Syndrome Centre North East says that this is an exciting development and will allow these young people to help influence policy that directly impacts on them.
He says that this decision by the CMETB has taken the pressure off parents to financially support these programmes:
