New plans for alcohol licenses could be detrimental to rural Irish pubs according to a local publican.
While the CEO of the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland welcomed plans for longer opening times, Widows Bar owner and Cavan independent councillor Brendan Fay, says it could make it unsustainable for country pubs.
He says that the plans mean they would now be competing with galleries, theatres, and stadiums, who would all be able to get alcohol licenses.
While councillor Fay does believe that longer opening hours should be permitted he thinks this ‘knee jerk’ reaction by the Government will not allow rural Irish pubs to get back up and running:
