The President is expected to sign a new Bill in the coming days which means adults here will be considered organ donors - unless they register to 'opt out'. It follows the passing of the long-awaited Human Tissue Bill - which cleared the Dáil last night and now goes to the President to sign into law.
CEO of the Irish Kidney Association, Carol Moore, says its a massive step forward - but it still ensures families have a vital role.
"The key thing is it's so important that families actually know their loved ones wishes," Carol Moore said, "So thwere's still a need for the conversations, still a need for ice-breakers like the Organ Donor Card or, the Think-Ahead Card so, we're still saying to families 'don't leave your loved ones in doubt'".
