The first meeting of the 34th Dáil is underway this morning. The names of all 174 TDs elected last month have been read into the Dáil record.
Taoiseach Simon Harris has offered his resignation to President Michael D Higgins in line with procedure.
Deputy Cathy Bennett along with Deputy David Maxwell are among 60 plus new TDs who are taking their seats in the Dail for the first time today.
The 34th Dail got underway earlier today where all 174 elected TDs were officially welcomed to the chamber. That’s 14 more TDs than the previous term which sees Fianna Fáil as the largest party followed in by Sinn Fein and Fine Gael.
Even though the breakdown of parties in Cavan Monaghan hasn’t changed since the 2020 election with 2 Sinn Fein, 2 Fianna Fáil and 1 Fine Gael - some faces have.
Matt Carthy, Niamh Smyth and Brendan Smith all return to Leinster House along with Cathy Bennett and David Maxwell.
Sinn Féin’s Pauline Tully was unsuccessful in her bid to be reelected while Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys decided to hang up her political boots prior to the recent general election.
The only major item on today’s order of business is the choosing of a Ceann Comhairle. There will then be nominations for the role of Taoiseach, none of which will be successful today.
Then the Dail will end for the Christmas break with government formation talks continuing and hopes that a new government will be in place in the early part of the new year.
