Gareth Walsh will take over responsibility for the Carrickmacross District from Superintendent Fergus Treanor who retired in September.
Superintendent John O'Flaherty has been moved to the Cavan-Monaghan Division to take responsibility for detective duties locally. He has previously worked in the National Protective Services Bureau.
However, no new Chief Superintendent has been appointed to replace John O'Reilly who retired last month.
Under the new Garda operational plan Cavan-Monaghan will merge with the Louth Division with headquarters in Drogheda.
Commissioner Drew Harris told the Cavan Joint Policing Committee last month that he expected to fill the Chief Superintendent post locally shortly.
