The government is set to place a limit on assets it can claim from elderly people who have farms or small businesses under the Fair Deal nursing home scheme.
The scheme sees participants contribute to the cost of their care according to their means, while the State pays the balance of the cost.
However, Monaghan Senator Robbie Gallagher noted that while there is a 7.5% deduction of assets which is capped at three years on a family home, "no such cap exists when it comes to a small farm or small business".
