Cllr Gibbons was first elected to Monaghan County Council following the last local election in June.

Sinn Fein's Paul Gibbons has been elected as Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council. The Castleblayney representative was co-opted to the position which was previously held by his party colleague Deputy Cathy Bennett. Deputy Bennett was elected to the 34th Dáil alongside Fine Gael's Deputy David Maxwell who also sat on Monaghan County Council as a local councillor prior to the General Election.

Speaking at yesterday's local authority meeting, Cllr Gibbons offered his "many thanks" to the outgoing Cathaoirleach Cathy Bennett TD and all of the elected members for their support. Cllr Gibbons said he is looking forward to representing locals and showcasing the "best of our people, communities and businesses in the months ahead."
