The new school building planned for Gael Scoil Lorgan in Castleblayney has just been moved to the construction stage by the Department of Education.
Staff and parents at the Irish language school have been campaigning for a new purpose-built school for over 10 years. In May, Education Minister Norma Foley, announced she had approved a new building, which will consist of eight classrooms and two special education teaching rooms.
The promise of a new school will mean staff and pupils will be able to move out of their current site in an industrial estate in the town. Last evening, the Minister let it be known that her department had given the green light for the Gael Scoil Lorgan plans to move to Construction phase.
Senator Robbie Gallagher said it is a welcome and significant development: "delighted to receive confirmation from Minister Norma Foley's office this afternoon that Gael Scoil Lorgan can now proceed to construction," Senator Gallagher told Northern Sound, "Now, that's a brand new Irish school in Castleblayney, which, will help to promote the Irish language. It's an eight-classroom school building which can now proceed to having the contractor on site. It's excellent news for Castleblayney so now, thankfully, we'll finally see construction taking place in the coming weeks fpr a brand new Irish school in Castleblayney."
