A new 'Care and Repair' service has been made available to older people living in Co Monaghan. The Service is provided by Age Action and will carry out small DIY jobs, free of charge, for people over the age of 55.
It's anticipated that the move will help older people to maintain their homes and enhance their independence. Sinead Keenan from Monaghan Volunteer Centre told Northern Sound that the that service is very important as older people may struggle to find tradespeople they trust or struggle to afford them.
"The Age Action service can help with safety-type jobs," explained Ms Keenan. "So, maybe somebody might need a smoke alarm or a carbon monoxide alarm installed. They might need grab rails in their shower or hand rails along the entrance to their home.
"Sometimes they might even get those pieces of equipment free of charge from the HSE and they just need somebody to install them. It can also help with other jobs like putting up a curtain pole, fixing loose kitchen doors, changing light bulbs and so on."
Older people who want to use the service can ring Age Action at 091 527 831
