New bus services are to be introduced in County Cavan. A new 186 Local Link service is planned from Cavan Town taking in Virginia, Mullagh, Kells, Gibbstown and is expected to be running by the end of 2024.
The National Transport Authority has also announced enhanced frequency on the 187 service from Virginia, Oldcastle, Crossakiel to Kells. A third service, to be known as the 178, will run from Cootehill, Shercock, Bailieborough and Virginia, and is expected to be running in the new year.
The new Cavan services are part of the NTA's Connecting Irish Rural Mobility Plan and are subject to funding availability. Cavan-Monaghan TD Brendan Smith had raised the need for more additional public transport services in the Northern Sound region in the Dáil. "Such services are important for many local communities", Deputy Smith said: "These are important services for so many communities across Cavan and also into Monaghan and Meath so, I've asked the NTA to try to ensure that these services are in pace as soon as possible."
