Cavan/Monaghan TD, Deputy Brendan Smith has been informed by the HSE that a new adult Physical and Sensory Residential Respite Unit in Cavan Town is due to open in the coming months.
The HSE in their correspondence to Deputy Brendan Smith state that this unit is currently funded for 2 beds.
At present a business case is being prepared by local Disability Services to seek additional funding for a further 2 beds. The local TD says there is a need for much more capacity for respite for both children and adults in Cavan and Monaghan.
The Annalee Respite Centre in Cootehill is a 5 bedded unit that caters for adults and children from counties Cavan and Monaghan on alternate weeks. An additional 5 bedded residential respite centre for children in the Cavan/Monaghan area will be provided in Monaghan and in the meantime an interim 5 bedroom residential respite facility will open there by the 1st October 2024.
Deputy Smith says respite services are vital to support families and places should be available when such support is needed. He says there has to be a stand alone facility in Cavan and a stand alone one in Monaghan.
