The Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council says negative attitudes towards migrants “cannot be tolerated”.
Colm Carthy was speaking at the virtual launch of the County Monaghan Integration Strategy, which outlines a three year plan to help migrants and asylum seekers feel at home in the region.
As part of the research for “We Belong”, migrants, asylum seekers and service providers were interviewed to see what obstacles prevent them from becoming contributing members of society.

They were language skills, access to public services, education and training, employment and business development, housing and accommodation and wider community acceptance and integration.

Dr Kathy Walsh from KW Research and Associates explained what happens now, after 38 actions were identified to overcome these barriers.
Colm Carthy said the views of those who oppose the “We Belong” programme are at odds with the majority of Monaghan people.
