Cavan and Monaghan have received nearly €500,000 under the Historic Structures Fund which is part of a national allocation of €4.5m for 95 heritage projects across the country. €117,500 has been awarded to three projects in Cavan including Billis Mill, Ballyjamesduff; Market House, Arva; and Quivvy Church in Belturbet.
In Monaghan, St McCartan's Cathedral, Laclurcan; Shanco Church, Emyvale; and St John the Evangelist Church, Dartrey receive a funding boost to the tune of €327,630. Cavan Heritage Office, Anne Marie Ward says the funding provides an opportunity to preserve and maintain the county's heritage.
She added that both Cavan and Monaghan are immersed in a tapestry of rich and diverse heritage - something that locals have a deep appreciation for. "We don't have to travel very far at all because it's right beside us; it's in all our towns and villages.
"There is a great interest in heritage in communities now; we have a fantastic historic graveyards' network and the communities are so enthusiastic about upkeeping their historic graveyards. And not only that, they are also interested in the natural heritage and biodiversity within these old historic graveyards as well.
"So, there is a lot of awareness out there and things are changing, and that is for the better," said Annemarie.
