A local breastfeeding group is putting Virginia on the map following on from it's national success at a recent award ceremony. The Virginia Breastfeeding Peer Support Group were awarded ‘Breastfeeding Support Group of the Year’ at an awards ceremony, which was held in Dunboyne.
The Virginia Breastfeeding Peer Support Group was set up in November 2015 to provide mother-to-mother breastfeeding support. It is run by mothers who have breastfed their children for extended periods and they provide their experience and time in a voluntary capacity.
Group member Mairéad McCahill-Riley, who is the Lactation Consultant for Cavan/Monaghan was also awarded ‘Lactation Consultant of the Year’.
Volunteer Lorna Fitzpatrick Gaule accepted the national award on behalf of the Virginia group. Speaking to Northern Sound, Lorna said she was "honoured" to the receive the award.
According to Lorna, the aim of the group is to provide breastfeeding solutions for breastfeeding issues, and our ethos is to support mothers to not only achieve, but to surpass their own breastfeeding goals.
The group meets every Wednesday morning in Virginia, and is proudly supported by the HSE, with Mairéad McCahill-Riley (PHN Lactation Consultant IBCLC for Cavan/Monaghan) attending once a month.
