The N2 between Castleblayney and Carrickmacross remains closed this afternoon following a fatal road traffic collision. The collision which took place this morning marks the first fatality to occur on Monaghan roads so far this. The fatal two vehicle collision involving a car and van took place at around 6.15am this morning at Moneygorbet, Castleblayney. According to Gardaí, the male driver of the car, aged in his 20s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body has since been removed to the mortuary in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda where a post mortem will take place.
A man in his 20s who was a passenger was injured and has been removed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda with non life threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the male driver of the van, aged in this 50s, was removed from the scene to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda with non life threatening injuries. Gardaí confirmed to Northern Sound that the road remains closed this lunch time while a technical examination of the scene is carried out by forensic collision investigators.
Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
