A Belturbet based wedding singer believes music choice is a major factor in couple's deciding where to get married.
It was revealed last week that the number of weddings taking place in churches has dropped significantly.
Last year 34.3% of weddings were in a church, down from 91.4% in 1994. Michael Meehan is a postman and wedding singer from Belturbet in Cavan. Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show, he says churches should be more open to appropriate secular music at ceremonies. He believes that while the sacred nature of weddings should be respected, couples should have more freedom to choose their music.
"I think the church should look at it, and I respect the church completely about hymns, but I think for the couple who's getting married in the church, for one day in their lives, they should be entitled to have an appropriate song that they might have as a favourite".
